LONDON (Reuters) – Richard Branson says the expansion of his Virgin Atlantic airline fleet will create 6,000 new jobs, and the group is in talks to set up a possible new airline in Nigeria.
Virgin Atlantic said on Thursday that U.S. investment firm Green Briar Equity Group may be one of the lead investors in its new U.S. budget airline Virgin America, confirming media reports.
“Green Briar Equity will possibly be one of the lead investors,” Branson told reporters in London, adding no final decision had been made.
The airline earlier announced it had placed orders and options for 26 aircraft from European aerospace giant Airbus worth $5.5 billion (3 billion pounds).

Thanks very much.
I’m still trying to work out whether or not I’ll be going along or if I’ll be ringing them and telling them that I’ve changed my mind.
Their letter which arrived in the post a few days ago looked like just a standard mail-merge jobby, which I expect it was. It told me that I was through to the next round of the recruitment process. I was under the impression that they invited all applicants to the interviews the week after next and made their mind up from there.
At just 19, I’m the youngest aged member of staff that Virgin will take on. I’m also a student wanting part-time hours, so what do I have going for me?
Fortunately, I’ve quite a lot of relevant experience at such a young age which could be a bonus. Like most people of my age, I work in ‘retail’ (the fancy term for shop-work) and have worked for the same company for nearly 3 and a half years, since I was 15. During my time, I have taken on the role of Cash Office Administrator and Supervisor. Both of these roles I have been in for nearly 3 years!
Fingers crossed, I might be lucky! If they’re anything like Thomas Cook were, maybe not so lucky!
Does anyone know what such a job would pay? The same job with South African Airways pays a mere Β£5.40 per hour, which is not even close to what I am earning at the moment. Its basically customer service work.
I would have to travel 25 miles to the airport for each day of work, so I would want the pay to be worthwhile to cover public transport costs.
Good luck to you π

wouldnt make much difference to me 2 ,3 or 4 engine aircraft. I’m thinking what Bmused said about some jobs going to Virgin America. It could be across the brand (Virgin Express, Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Blue and the soon to be Virgin America)
p.s good luck michael on the future interview

I have heard from a source up here in the very warm north west that in a survey with Virgin Alantic customers a good percentage preferred the feel good factor of 4 engines.
Paul
But how can that be accurate, if VS don’t operate twins?

Didn’t think so.
I haven’t seen a recruitment drive like this for many years.

Will any of these 6000 jobs include those for Virgin America?
I don’t think so Sandy, those 6000 positions were about VS.
Virgin America will be a different company. As far as I remember they were talking about roughly 2000 jobs at SFO and 2000 other jobs and the Head quarteri at NY

Sounds good Michael!

Not really.
With their huge order for yet more A340-600s, Virgin is going to be flying many more flights each day. They’re going to need a fair few more staff to fly the passengers, check the passengers in, cater for the passengers in the air etc.
Let’s face it, it’s going to take until 2010 to do it, so there is still a while to go.

It seems like a huge amount of jobs.Virgin Atlantic an airlinjes competeing in a strong market trying to offer low fares has to keep its cost base down.Maybe im not reading it corresctly but 5000 or 6000 seems like alot.

Doing what job Michael? Good luck whatever it is!
Part-time ‘Passenger Services Agent’. Obviously, I’ve still got education coming up, so full-time is currently out of the question.

Branson said Virgin picked the four-engine Airbus aircraft over Boeingβs 777 planes because passengers preferred the extra engines, but also said he took into account the fact Airbus was European and would create jobs in Britain.
I love the fact that this guy is making an honest comment about this choice. It’s great that he would see his Airbus purchase as an incentive since it would be creating jobs in Britain. Nothing wrong with supporting the home team. Now if we would only see that occasionally here….

According to the FT:
‘ The airline, which is owned 51 per cent by Sir Richard and 49 per cent by Singapore Airlines, is planning to add 5000 more jobs to its workforce of 7,500 by the end of the decade’
Sorry to correct you but I trust the FT more.
