Question about GLA

Can anyone tell me what the round structure with orange pointy bits on top possibly made of plastic on abbotsford road a couple hundred feet from the Airport Fire Service training area

Thanks for the reply the reason i was asking was because i was looking at yesterdays logs on the egpf.vze.com website and noticed on of the 2 YAK 42s were parked there and the other was at Stand 7.

Does anyone know where P4-GJC would have been parked

Jim,

Area Z is just near the orange VOR/DME (Airport perimeter road – heading towards Inchinnan Industrial Estate). If you are coming in from Rwy 05 the first exit to your left is Zulu 2, after you pass this hold you are on taxiway Zulu which runs to Zulu 1 which is just before the entrance to Rwy 10.

I’m not too sure what it’s used for (apart from a taxiway) but I think the fire training is carried out near or in Area Zulu and also sometimes aircraft are parked there.

If you do know the road from St James’ interchange which takes you to Inchinnan, you will know that you run parallel to the main runway. After you take the left sweeping bend you are then parallel to Area Z.

The Shorts I saw said AeroConder along the side of it i’m sure along the top of the fuselage.

BTW what is the construction plant doing in the middle of the airfield is this something to do with them adding another runway or something

Yes additional hard stands along with more to the East of the new T2 to help with peak parking demands. The Shorts 360 in the two pictures (CS-TMY) only has the Aerocondor text applied to the starboard side. That said I think Highland Airways is using another leased from Aerocondor 360 at the minute ?

Er, not yet 😀 They are constructing 2 additional a/c stands for a/c up to 757 size due space constraints on the main aprons. 🙁

It’s the ‘GOW’ VOR, it used to be located on Eaglesham Moor but moved to GLA a number of years ago. It can and has been used as an Instrument Landing Aid at GLA (VOR/DME Approach) but is mostly used as a waypoint for Transatlantic aircraft, in times past a/c directly over the ‘GOW’ would report to Shanwick eg ” Air France 220 flight level 360 over the GOW” but that’s rarely heard these days. 🙁

I’m certain I saw it taxiing last week, but can’t be sure?

Night time mail and newspaper flights for Highland Airways to/from Inverness generally speaking, it rests up during the day.

I’m sure that aerocondor plane was parked up near terminal 2 I seen that and a couple of others when i went for a short walk past the taxi ranks outside the terminal building so after G-ARPP being scrapped what did they do with it?

I actually thought it was maybe a shower of some sort for fire fighters when dealing with chemicals but that sounds too rediculious the training unit looks like a plane but just constructed out of something like sheet metal.

Another Question for you ren you possibly know the answer

You know how they took away the old airplane that stood on the grass at Abbotsinch Road near where Rwy 23s Holding point is are they going to replace it with something else?

The fire trainer “plane” is just a crude metal mock up of what looks like a DC-10 shaped fuselage. Similar mock ups can be found at other airports in the UK.

As for the other aircraft, it was former BA Trident G-ARPP and was scrapped last year after many years sitting on that bay. It won’t be replaced as such but the space it freed up is sometimes occupied by overnighting aircraft such as this Shorts 360 of Aerocondor, also some pics of G-ARPP over the years and at the end of it’s life span…

Can’t recall seeing it but sounds like a radar installation of sorts ? Will have a look next time I’m down.
