Before you can marry by a civil ceremony in England and Wales you must give formal notice of your intention to marry. A notice of marriage is a legal document, which is valid for one year, and a notice of marriage must be given by each party to the marriage to the Superintendent Registrar in the district(s) where you live. This must be done in person.
Both of you must have lived in a registration district in England or Wales for at least seven days immediately before giving notice at the Register Office.
You will need to produce evidence of your name, age, marital status, nationality and residency. A current valid full passport is the preferred document.
After giving notice, you must wait a further 15 clear days before the marriage can take place. (There is sufficient time between the auction closing and the date of marriage)
Your local Superintendent Registrar will be able to advise you further.
