Photography US East Coast Style

The US has been getting a lot of bad press recently in various forums (Airliners.net, Jetphotos) re their treatment of spotters/photographers. A recent visit to the east coast to a couple of airfields didn’t cause me any problems whatsoever, but an other airport on the east coast did, but that’s another story.
The first pic is of the excellent viewing terrace provided at Raleigh-Durham Airport in North Carolina, this offered shade, seats, cold drinking water, clean bathrooms, a picnic area, free parking, and until very recently a live ATC feed, oh, and an excellent elevated view over one of the runways!

[sarcasm]No. Really?[/sarcasm]

Even before scrolling down, and just seeing the top of the photo, I thought that looks like the Fabric on the AF A330 seats… I scroll down, and, lo and behold, it’s an Air Frog screen… so… would I be right in plumping for the A330?

Darn! Too easy! 😀

‘Stand clear’? no warning about not parking your 2CV up near the Jet Blast? 😉

All you’d need is a BBQ and a cold drink and you’d be in paradise

Maybe a couple of “Hooter Air” girls as well

Charlotte, North Carolina also has a spotter location. There is a parking lot/viewing area right next to the approach end of runway 18R. Every nice weather day it’s common to see a group of folks sitting out their in their lawn chairs watching the arrivals.

Those places are still open after 9/11 ????

The only closures I’ve seen have involved on-airport observation decks. Most are still open but have closed access to the outdoor deck portions.

Off airport viewing areas, no matter how close, are still open from what I’ve seen. It’s odd that you can’t stand on an open platform on the airport property that places you about 100 yards from the nearest aircraft AFTER you’ve passed through security but you can still stand less than 200 feet under the runway arrival path where there is no security in place. Obviously those in charge don’t understand where the real threats lie.
