taken from ATWOnline:
Boeing announced to media in London Thursday that it has secured 140 additional orders for 7E7s from 20 airlines, although to date it only has identified four customers for the new aircraft: All Nippon Airways (50), Air New Zealand (two), First Choice (six) and Blue Panorama (four). With this year’s Farnborough Air Show just days away, speculation is building about two sales campaigns at Asia/Pacific carriers in which Boeing is believed to have a leg up. Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific Airways both are looking to replace and/or supplement their 747-400 fleets and are thought to be close to announcing orders. The ‘conjecture’ is that SIA will order 777-300ERs and dash 200LRs to replace its 747-400s and A340-500s. It also is understood to be a launch customer for the 7E7 and has paid a refundable deposit on up to 20, insiders close to the deal said. Boeing declined to comment. Meanwhile, Cathay is thought to favor the 777-300ER to replace its leased A340-600s.
In addition, Cathay and Qantas have been searching for at least a dozen secondhand 747s to handle traffic growth but the quest is proving to be difficult. Qantas now is believed to be looking at new 777-300ERs as a better investment.–Geoffrey Thomas

Perhaps Virgin Blue for the rumoured west coast USA services?
By: Bmused55 - 18th July 2004 at 01:04
As much as I’d like that to happen, i don’t think it will.
Getting a 777 or 7E7 would go against VS’ philosophy of “4 engines for Longhaul”
But then again… I wouldn’t be expecting VS to order either… and Wys has warned of an “unexpected” announcement.
Or maybe its the changing of VS’ name to “Laid” LOL!

Probably the rumoured 777 purchase?
Or the totally unexpected purchase of 70 Rekkof F70s to start european flights to feed Virgin Atlantic! Noone expects that, so that mus be what Wys is refering too! 😀 (yes it’s late and I am getting silly)

Expect a sudden surprise announcement from Virgin. All I can say at the moment. It may not be what you expect!

I am afraid Cathay have not been happy with the A340-600 for a number of reasons. Reliability and performance are just a couple.
Thats what I have been hearing.

At least one of the machines involved went more or less straight from factory to storage – they all found buyers PDQ, though.

why would CX want to get rid of there A346s already? Not satisfied with its performance?

Were they really factory fresh or second user?
By: Grey Area - 16th July 2004 at 18:33
Boeing did offset a number of factory-fresh A340-313Xs against an order from SQ in the past (for B777s?), so it’s not entirely without precedent.
