Seems they are trying to get a presence over here now…
New departures from Manchester and Southampton
From 1st November 2004 Air Berlin will fly from two additional British airports. There is a new daily connection from Manchester to Berlin-Tegel and one to Dusseldorf. Manchester – Paderborn will be flown four times a week. Another new route is Southampton to Paderborn three times weekly.
London-Stansted will continue to connect the British capital with Berlin-Tegel, Dusseldorf, Hanover, Munster-Osnabruck, Nuremberg, Paderborn and Palma de Mallorca, some routes are serviced two or even three times per day. In the past year almost 700,000 passengers travelled with Air Berlin on these routes.
The new connections from Manchester and Southampton can be booked from now, like all other Air Berlin routes, via the internet (airberlin.com), round the clock in the airline?s Service Centre (0870 ? 738 88 80, 8p/min) or at selected travel agents. Early birds fly from £19 (one way), inclusive of all fees and taxes. There is also a complimentary on board service.
Very good news, especially for Southampton, seems very strange they would start up from there… from £19 with complimentary on board service! Wow!

Wasn’t Germania planning a route from PIK to Berlin? Seems that has yet to materialise.
Been, failed and gone away again.

I’m not sure why they didn’t go for EDI. there is a massive German presence in and around Edinburgh.
I thought 602 squadron sorted them out in 1939 ? 😀

Seems so long ago now Shamrock321. Wasn’t it Munich?
If only Duo got more time…their figures from EDI were
rising fast, a lucrative summer season could have made the difference.

Wernt Duo going to start service to Berlin from Edinburgh before the suddenly and suprisingly went bankrupt or was that from BHX.

Strange choice of destination from SOU but as no low cost company flies to Germany from south of London anything must be an improvement. If they were to start to FRA / DUS / MUC (any of them) then that would be great as it would offer a greater range of onward connections although the Air Berlin flights from Paderborn are extensive.

As for a scottish link to germany. I do believe EDI is the best choice. There are far more germans in Edinburgh than Glasgow. Also, a lot of germans like to visit edinburgh if they come to scotland. So its the natural choice of airport.
And I’m not saying this to be pro-EDI. Its a fact.
BAA had the chance but they blew it! Now it seems the
airport is suffering from lack of facilities again.
The new terminal is about to exceed its design capacity
of 8M about 7 years earlier than anticipated.
BAA’s remedy of course is ‘calming’ rather than immediate expansion.
Attempted diversion of inquiries to their other monopoly airport has given non-BAA NCL a boost. 😡
Would independent owners at EDI have failed so miserably?

They’ed make a mint with a Direct network from EDI to various german airports.
There was a huge German charter programme a few years back from EDI on Thursdays… it wasn’t repeated the following year despite massive loads..the excuse evidently
was lack of ‘slots’. 😡
Strange they found the slots one year, but they were
difficulty the next?. Were BAA secretly hoping to ‘divert’ the flights elsewhere but the airlines were having none of it?
I get the feeling there is a lack of enthusiasm at
EDI on BAA’s part that is not shared by enthusiastic
airlines. 😡

I was hoping that was going to be EDI there! 🙂 We’ve been campaigning for a Berlin link. 🙂 SOU seems weird though.
SOU being a BAA airport especially! 😡 I wonder if BAA’s fees there are rock-bottom compared to BAA’s
EDI?

Padderborn might be because of the strong British Military presence in the area. A lot of Famly and frineds visit the soldiers. OR familys who live attached with the soldiers come visit friends or relative in the UK, so there is a lot of potential I think.

Perhaps SOU to somewhere else in Germany with a prior tourism recognition or somewhere that can offer a good number of connections would work better. I wasn’t slagging SOU, per se, more the unusual city pair of PAD/SOU. Berlin is so up and coming, I think it would have been a good choice of route from SOU. I also think that EDI or GLA (or both) could make do with a decent BER service.

I think SOU might work quite nicely as it is an untapped area from down this side of London.

Paderborn from friggin’ Southampton?? WHY?
Hope they prove me wrong, but it wasn’t a route that seemed obviously dying to be operated by a LCC. Viel Glück Air Berlin! 😉
