Donβt want start an Airbus/Boeing fight but to me the A340/A340ng just reminds me of a 707. I know the 340 is a tad wider but it look just so dated. I wonder if Boeing were ever thinking to put 4 engines on there 767’s that this would of been a competitor for this modern 707? Your thoughts on this.

And that plane would have nothing in common with a 707. except that both have 4 engines. π
That’s it in a nutshell

Don’t forget about the DC-8, which came into service about the same time as the 707…
Or the Convair 880 and 990

nice models Ren Frew,
I’ve flown in the BWIA A340 last year to Trinidad, and it was a great journey !!

A340-300 is certified for up to 440 passengers!
Comparisons between a B707 and an A340 are akin to comparing an old Anglia to a Mondeo.

LOVE the BWIA model! What type of model is it and where did you get it from?

“Personally, I dont think the A340 looks dated at all! With it’s winglets and long wings I think it’s very graceful.”

I doubt Airbus saw the A340 as a replacement for the 707 when they designed it.

I agree, but the 707 was designed a long time ago, but some milatry units were fitted with CFM powerplants, this is when it takes on the looks of our modern day A340. So if Boeing had made a 707NG 767 cross section with newer wings say this would be the same as the A340!.

it’s not a case of the 340 being a tad wider… the 707 has the same cabin dimensions as the 727, 737 and 757…

In my opinion, there are many differences, much more than things in common. the MTOW for example, and also the A340-300 can carry up to 295 passengers(the A340-600 up to 380 passengers), the 707 up to only 147 passengers. Of course years counts, the 707 is old and the 340 is relatively new, but i would call the A340 a longhaul widebody much more than a 707.
