An axe through the heart

Today I sat in the official meeting that unceremoniously closed the local airport. Not only have I grown up next to this airport and watched countless airshows there but I learned to fly there and was also an flight instructor for 2 years. It’s been in operation for a little over 90 years and was the first airport in the state. It was a training facility in WWII for cadet pilots as well. In fact an instructor I flew with several times was a Stearman and AT-6 instructor during that time at the airport before he left to “Fly the Hump.”

A small group of men and women in suits voted to shut it down. Using a short list of lies and misinterpretations to back up their position they put the ball in motion to close it for good. In a matter of 5 minutes it was over, from the start of the presentation to the end of the voting.

So long….. 🙁

The see that they can get $30 Million for the land and that is as far as their eyes can see. They assured everyone that this is the best alternative as it both meets the needs of the General Aviation community and flight training. It’s almost comical the logic they quote that justifies this course of action. That $30 Million is a carrot dangling in front of their noses and they are doing what ever it takes to get there. Very upsetting.

It’s maybe just my suspicious nature, but do the “suits” have the ground marked out
for alternative, and profitable, purposes?

Yes when the people in suits decide to do something
there is nothing people like you can do, no doubt they knew what they were doing
90 years of flying gone in 5 mins

That’s too bad WD. 🙁 I’ve never heard of the airport, but I have heard of Kent St. University by virtue of their College Basketball team.
