There was an earlier question on how the big Antonov’s undercarriage works. I caught one on the 19’th of May doing a 180 on a 150′ (46 m.) wide runway. The two front legs work like a tea trolley/shopping cart, but are of course steerable. They can turn close to 90 degrees. The main gears also turn. The two Volga Dnepr 124’s were RA-82044 and -045. They were going to Kabul via Baku, Azerbadjan.

Just like the back wheel stearing on a two-part bus, a large truck. These mainwheel steering is also on the 747 (two inner blocks) and on the 777 (rear two wheels of each block).

Yes, there is also drawbacks, by being in the “first line”. Sometimes you just have to take a quick look – “Hey, that would have been a nice picture!” – and go on with your business, controlling or piloting or whatever.
Best regards

The few times I’ve seen the A-124 I’ve never seen the gear movement or even thought to look (I’m ususally distracted by its shear size). Thanks for sharing these pictures, it’ll make me be sure to watch the gear during ground operations. 🙂
