Off to the states in Aug this year for honeymoon need some help
Travel plan is as followed
Heathrow-San Francisco
San Francisco-Washington DC
Wash DC-Boston
Boston-New York
New York-Heathrow of Manchester
Want to fly on a A340-600 of Virgin and any 777. Does anybody know I can go about this to ensure I get on these types? And how to go about this.

Thanks Bhoy. I personally could care less about Oneworld’s. 😉 I wouldn’t mind Skyteam’s, if they had one.

In Star, it’s
Mobile Services -> Mobile Timetable.
Don’t ask me where I the oneworld one can be found… I couldn’t find it on the oneworld website, but I could download it from the AA website (in their downloadable timetable section).
I keep dropping hints to Sky Team about introducing their own… twice now I’ve been given a survey on how they could improve their site, and I keep mentioning a decent timetable facilty…

Interesting. I was lurking around the Star website and couldn’t find the link. Even though you gave me the direct link, out of curiosity, where on the main page do you go to get there?

yup. downloadable at http://st.flightlookup.com/StarDownload/index.html

I just go to Star’s website and use the schedule they have there, but it’s a pain in the ass. You basically have to re-enter the dates anytime you want to do a new search or by clicking ‘back.’ Is there a downloadable version that I was not aware of? I have United’s downloadable timetable and as nice as it is, it’s limited to their flights and codeshares.

The method I use is the downloadable Star Alliance/oneworld timetables, which provide flight details for all scheduled flights operated by all of the respective carriers of the alliance.
Schedules are avaliable to download/update once a week (you don’t have to do it so often if you don’t want, though), so aircraft used are always pretty up to date.

A good way to checking ‘planned’ aircraft types is with expedia.
Go to www.expedia.co.uk and key in a leg of a journey. If you accept the flight, it will tell you what the planned aircraft is. You can then hit the back button or cancel button and continue browsing your options. Expedia will list all the possible options for you and ultimately by going into each option, you will find what the aircraft types are.
Then, make a note of the flight numbers you’re interested in and book through whatever means is suitable for you, either travel agent, expedia or whoever.
Its the way I always check out shceduled routes….
Hope this helps; have a great honeymoon! 🙂

Well, your travel agency (or whomever/whatever you’re getting your package from) could book you on Virgin to/from the states, and UA or AA within the States. More often than not, sticking with a particular carrier or alliance is typically cheaper, unless you do separate itineraries. I always do my planning on my own, so I don’t know. I will pay more to make sure I’m maximizing my miles. 😀

Guess going on a honeymoon and more interested in the airplane then the woman beside you can mean a very bad honeymoon. 😀
Not at all. I went to St. Maarten on my honeymoon. We didn’t stay at one of those hotels on Maho, but we drove over there 4 out of the 7 days we were there. While the wife was sunbathing, I was spotting. Too easy.
As far as some help for Wilag, those cities you describe are tailor made for United Airlines. If you wanted to fly Virgin for purposes of an A346, you’d only be able to do so for the first and last legs, but not in between. I’m just going to choose a random date in August and list possible aircraft types (all on United) on the legs you indicated, and the number of daily flights operated in parenthesis.
LHR-SFO: 777, 744 (2)
SFO-IAD: 319, 757, 763 (9)
IAD-BOS: CRJ, 733, 735, 319, 320 (9)
BOS-LGA: 319, 320 (19) <– Operated by USAirways on codeshare
JFK-LHR: 777, 763 (2)

LHR-SFO is operated vy a Virgin B747 and BA 747, however if going with AA or UA then you will get your 777.
JFK-LHR with Virgin is a toss up between any of their types, and it will be pot luck whether you get a 744, a 343 or a 346.
SFO-IAD may well be a 777 with UA or AA as well, Greekdude is probably the best person for that one though.

Being serious, I don’t think there is anyway you can be gauranteed a certain aircraft type on any schedule.
A flight may be planned for an A340-600, but problems up the line may call for a 744 replacement or vice versa.
The only thing you can realy do is book flights that you know what type operates and hope there isn’t an equipement change.
Sometimes equipment change is good. Like Mine and MAtthews flight from Stansted, was scheduled to be a 737-300, but we got a 700 instead… magic

ha haa,
No the honeymoon will be when we get there, none of that boring lets stay on a beech for 2 week in some crappy island. So we decided to do some touring and to make the trip a tad different it’s up to me to sort the travel arrangments out. So thats why I thought I would do it this way. And being a avaition buff why not.
