Work has started on the new tower at EDI!

Work has started today on the new control tower at EDI! ๐Ÿ˜€
It’ll be 57m high and will be seen from ‘miles around’.
Nice to have some good news after the bad news of the duo collapse.
EDI is going to be almost unrecognisable next year.
By then we’ll have a new control tower, a multi-stoery car park and full lenth taxiways. Don’t know when the next stage of the terminal expansion is starting though.

Good idea Joe, there’s plenty other venues for that kind of “discussion”. ๐Ÿ˜€

They should knock them both down and build one “Super Scottish Airport” in the middle to prevent these kind of problems!

That’s been talked about many times, a MAN of the north basically. There’s a lot of problems concerning that proposal, suitable land for starters.

WORK was due to begin today on a ยฃ10 million air traffic control
tower at Edinburgh airport.

The 57-metre-high structure, which will replace the old building at
the former RAF Turnhouse site, is expected to be completed by the
summer of 2005.

The airport was set to hold a ground-breaking ceremony attended by
Donald Anderson, leader of Edinburgh City Council, and Richard
Jeffrey, managing director of Edinburgh Airport, who were together
cutting the first sod. Mr Jeffrey said: “The construction of this
new air traffic control tower is a further significant investment
from BAA in its Scottish airport infrastructure, offering National
Air Traffic Services a purpose-built and modern facility from which
to provide its vital control and safety services.”

Councillor Anderson added: “Demand for air travel is growing, not
least in Edinburgh and Scotland. The Capitalโ€™s airport is predicted
to carry between 17 and 19 million passengers by 2030 and this
development will ensure it is perfectly poised to cope with this
growth. A world-class city needs a world-class airport and this
investment by BAA will play a key role in securing this.”

The control tower, being constructed on the approach road to the
airport, will ensure NATS has the capacity to manage the growth in
air traffic expected at Edinburgh Airport over the next 30 years.

I remember a pic of it getting posted somewhere. I’ll see if I can find the link.

What EDI needs is a longer, harder runway to take appropriately loaded heavies for trans-atlantic flights. Thats the only thing stopping airlines from operating fully loaded widebodies into EDI

I hate to say this but EDI is not actually categorised by
BAA to host long-haul flights. The terminal and ramp are
really unable to handle anything larger than A310 or B767.

EDI might have the odd A330 and above but these aircraft take-up two stands and the terminal area has problems catering for pax above 250.

Yes indeed, the runway has to be extended by at least 300
metres, EDI lost the Emirates service for this reason alone.

I can’t see anything immediate being implemented either,
now is the time to extend whilst the taxiway improvements are in progress.

Otherwise we are looking some 5/6 years down the line and
god knows how many long haul services we will lose in that timescale. ๐Ÿ˜ก ๐Ÿ˜ก

The big crane will have been for the multi-storey car park which is now almost finished. Another couple of months and it should be done.
The runway isn’t used as a taxiway, it is used for backtracking if necessary, however that’ll be a thing of the past come later this year when the taxiways are completed.

I dont like airports where the runway in use has to be used as a taxi-way
