Travellers land from expanded EU
Travellers arrived at Gatwick and Dover from eastern Europe
Travellers have arrived at Gatwick and Dover from the eastern European countries which have joined the EU.
Claudia Zureck arrived at Gatwick on a flight from Krakow just after 0900 BST on Saturday.
She is planning to work in a hotel and improve her English and might stay in the UK, even though her family and friends have remained in Poland.
She said: “Maybe I will like it here more than in Poland and maybe I will stay – we’ll see.”
We were standing in the row where EU was written and for me it felt really good
Vilte Linkeviciute
One couple who passed through Dover on Saturday have lived in London for two years and now plan to make a future for themselves in England.
Vilte Linkeviciute, 23, and her fiance, Paul Freimanas, 24, had spent a fortnight on holiday in their home town of Kaunas, Lithuania.
Miss Linkeviciute, who is currently working as a waitress but studied agriculture in Lithuania, said: “When we got to Dover today, we just showed our passport and they said ‘welcome’.
“That was a good feeling. We were standing in the row where EU was written and for me it felt really good.”
She said she was planning to stay in Britain to create a better life for her children.
“There are more opportunities here because later I can study to get a better job,” she said.
