Just out of interest, what type of cargo does airports such as Stansted receive mainly? i.e Is it mail and lighter feight, such as at EDI where it is actually a busy cargo airport but mainly for mail, where TNT has a major presence, or does it receive more heavy freight or ‘heavy metal’ such as PIK?
Do you know the figures for freight in tonnes at STN or aiports like Manston?
For Scottish airports I found this:
Air freight / air mail (tonnes)
1. EDI : 4,363
2. PIK : 2,510
3. GLA : 401
for January.
Infact EDI has numerous TNT/DHL/UPS/Channel Express/Atlantic etc A300’s/727’s/757’s/Let’s/Fokker F27’s/Shorts 360’s/BAe 146 200 & 300QC’s etc etc
EDI tends to average 17 cargo flights a night during the busiest times.

The cargo aircraft at PIK are not there solely for delivering cargo to Prestwick, they only stop there then carry on elsewhere to their finla destination, normally somewhere in the US.
Plus, as well as all EDI’s dedicated cargo flights, a lot of the passenger flights will be carrying cargo in the hold.

I’m surprised to see EDI outdoing PIK in the cargo stakes, given that PIK’s main business income comes from handling cargo/freight and also given the number and size of freighter’s that can be witnessed passing through, mainly 747’s but a lot of DC-10’s A300’s and the odd Soviet type.

A see the evening flights from time to time when watching the movements.
Good to see the HS 748s still going. Can’t beat the whistling Rolls Royce Dart engines :).

Right well Stansted is the UK’s third biggest Air Freight Centre, with around 200,000 tonnes of cargo handled a year.

STN has a large variety of cargo. Air France used to have their weekly 742F service bringing flowers from the Caribbean, we have FedEx here as their main UK base carrying anything that needs to be taken. Then we have Emerald and Streamline aviation with their cargo flights, UPS taking mail and other such items to America, and then TNT and Channel Express taking things accross Europe. Another one is Global Supply Systems operating their 744F’s in a joint operation with BA and Atlas Air. I’ll try and find cargo figures for STN…..
