Big training decision (opinions needed!!)

I know that really, at the end of the day I can only make this decision, but on Wednesday last week I decided to pull out of my upcoming JAA ground exams which I was due to sit on May 4th. My decision behind this was simple, I’ve had to take three weeks compassionate leave during the first stage of my ground school and I felt that although I could pass the majority of the papers, some of those passes would not be as good as I would hope for, and there was no doubt in my mind that I would fail my instruments paper. So the decision to delay taking these exams seems to be the right one, I’d rather get all first time passes with an average of 90% than one fail and an average of 78% (the pass mark being 75%)

Anyway, I’ve intially rebooked my exams for June with four weeks self study and a two week brush up course as my revision. But this morning I woke up and it came to me that it might be a good plan to start again from scratch rather than patching up bits here and there. This would also give me a few months off to sort out the personal problem which caused me to take the leave in the first place.

I was just wondering what everyone else thought of this logic? Should I just get on with it in June and do my best, or should I blitz it by starting again in July and getting this family issue out of the way first?

All the very best of luck Martin, can’t blame you, I too would want to pass well instead of just scraping. Good luck!

Well, after several days of contemplation and chatting with family, friends and easyJet cews! I’ve decided to take some time out and start again. I know I could have got through these exams, but I want decent passes and so I’ve decided to take it from the top again.

A friend of mine is due to start the course in June/July and after talking with her at length about it I’ve agreed to join her on her course. I’ll continue to keep youy all updated.

In the meantime, thanks once again for all your fantastic support!

Martin,

I completely agree with all the others.
I havn’t done anything like your sort of exam but I would suggest you just think about it for as long as neccesary and come up with an answer that you feel confident and happy with.

I think it would be better to start again from fresh and have it all clear in your mind for the exam. As you’ve done it twice you’ll have a better memory in the exam and the questions will seem easy for you hopefully!

If you have other issues on your mind like your personal problem then it could just be a distraction and you may not achieve your 100% best which no doubt is what you want to do. If you get a mark your not happy with it will come back to haunt to froever probably if your like me!

If you get your 100% best with all your concentration and effort I think you will be fully satisfied with your mark and you’ll know yourself it’s your personal best!

Hope all goes well whatever you do,
do whatever you feel right

Joe

Very good post , just shows how the Forum has changed already . Martin all I can say is – do what you feel most comfortable doing , if you have issues in your life right now – sort them out and go back flying without any nagging doubts in your head . I’m sure you’ll make to proper decision – and do it for your own reason not for any other reason. 😉

Thanks for the great advice guys. I’m currently thinking I might just start again in June and blitz it, at the end of the day I’m here to get a license and for no other major reason. I’ve got an interview with the CGI (Chief Ground Instructor) later this week and will keep you informed of the out come.

Thanks once again guys, and to the two younger guys, you really are a credit to the younger members, after all the stupidity of the past few weeks I’m delighted to see you guys leading the way! Keep it up!

To echo the others, I agree that you should take the time now to put things right personally, so that you can approach your career with a clear and focussed mind. Niggling doubts and anxieties will only deter you from your ultimate goal which we are all looking forward to you reaching as much as you are.

Good luck with whatever decisions you make. 😉

Martin.

Have to agree with the others. Two very mature responses from NCL and EAL_KING which really do not need adding to. You are right, it is your decision and I am confident that you will make the best decision for you. Whatever you decide, I wish you luck.

I have to agree with the others Martin. You are professional enough in your approach to be dissatisfied if you can’t honestly say in your heart of hearts you gave it your all. A low pass will eat into your conscience for a long time and bother you when you are job hunting. This is an intense period of your life that needs you to have a clear head and 100% devotion. I think you need to get home sorted and then return.

It’s so easy for us to dish out our opinion but so difficult for you to make the choice. Whatever choice you make I feel confident that you have the wherewithall to cope.

Regards
Ian

if the family problem is causing you worry and concern and causing your revision/work to not be at its best then take the time off and start in july again but if this will take not a long time and you feel up to doing the exams take them but do whats best for you and your family
