A Tribute to my favourite Jet Airliner

I don’t care much for the “Heavies”, give me one of these and I’ll be set for life.

For what it’s worth, Yak-40’s can be seen at Stockholm-Arlanda from time to time, replacing the usual Belavia An-24. The Polish Government Yak-40 also stops by now and then.

I guess they aren’t very common in the UK considering the distance to the CIS and other countries in E Europe?

I”m developing more of an interest in Soviet types for some reason, I suppose it’s because they look so unique, and western types now look so similar ?

It would be nice to foster more discussions about them whilst they are still flying and before they get replaced by the newer westernised designs and indeed western types themselves as witnessed at Aeroflot and Balkan to name but a couple.

It strikes me Soviet aviation is a little like british and european aviation was in the seventies, with the emergence of more open markets and western/USA types inflitrating the once proud indigenous aviation industries of the UK and elsewhere.

Ja – hello and I’m very well thank you:D I have been doing a computer course, which I have now finished, and you will see me around here a little more because I have two flight reports and a spotting report to post.

Back to the topic, it was nice to see a piece about the Yak, I am interested in Soviet airliners, but very little is posted about them, and especially little about the Yak types. I have only seen the larger Soviet types such as Il62, Tu-134, Tu-154, I’ve never seen a Yak.

Hey Comet long time no see, how are you mate, hope things are well for you! Thanks for pointing out what I was going to say. Yes I have seen the performance factors WD, and the 40’s have an incredible short and rough field capability, comparable to those of turbo prop a/l’s but with the speed and range of J/L’s.

And 32 people max is a good size (less in the case of a two class 300 series max of 28 people) compared to the near 100 of the 42’s making these birds similar in size to the B727’s or BAC 1-11’s.
The 40’s are more like an a/l version of a Falcon or HS 128 and have been quoted as being a jet version of the DC-3 in Russia (not my comments) in terms of its performance.

The Yak-40 is a very tough little aircraft. It was designed to be able to operate from rough airfields with the very minimum of ground support, ideal for some areas in Russia.

Do you know that for a fact or are you just assuming? I’ve never seen performance numbers for either the Yak-40 or 42 but it’s not a matter of wingsweep. The Falcon bizjets have some serious sweep and they are outstanding shortfield aircraft. The Yak-42 from what I’ve seen have some pretty significant leading edge devices.

Sonnenflieger: With the above mentioned reason as well as it being small and able to have a two class system First and ecconomy! Plus the rear door, I love that as well (not that I’m gay or anything, I just love self contained systems!

Speedbird 12T: that’s nice and interesting but why spoil my tribute? The concorde is a lovely plane but gets a lot of talk, the yak doesn’t!

Fascinating! Don’t think I’ve heard of anyone having this little gem as a favourite! What is it you like best about the Yak-40?
