Why do aircraft land into the wind?

My girlfriend asked the other day an dI didn’t know, can you help??

I’m pretty sure that i read somewhere that planes used to land with the wind, but that used to cause a lot of overshoots, that why it changed i suppose.

In a nutshell, a headwind gives greater lift on the wings at a lower groundspeed (i.e. the airspeed is higher than the groundspeed). This also applies to take off.
