You need to read a bit closer next time. It says “last-ditch maneuvre” not ditch maneuvre.

Jeanske, evidently you either have not been a pilot in command during Instrument flying or you have been but never listened to what the instructors said. I agree they should have been checking their instruments all the time (if that is what you meant) but from youre comment I take it you mean that they should be able to feel whether they are ascending or descending. One thing you learn in pilot training is: DONT TRUST YOURE INSTINCTS. To demonstrate this often instructors will blind fold the trainee and then tell them to keep the aircraft straight and level. After a minute they take the blind fold off the student and it is amazing how bad the attitudes on the instruments are after the minutes ‘instinct flying’. The plane is normally doing about a “rate 1” turn, approx 25/30 degrees, which is a lot. So, the pilots should have checked the instruments but to say that they should be able to feel if they are climbing or not is very very wrong. Not only this, but I remember the story about Eastern 401/501, cant remember, the L1011 Tristar that crashed. The pilots disengaged the autopilot by accident and failed to notice they entered a descent. This is because youre instincts wont tell you what to do when you are in the air!!

You need two sleeping pilots to not notice that the aircraft is descending rapidly if it should be ascending! What’s a ditch maneuvre? Isn’t that pulling one wing to the water so that touches first? otherwise you’ll lose the engines! Can’t wait to know the cause of this crash!
