Just read a rumour on the PP.Net forums, that BA are considering to buy some Boeing 777-300’s and drop 15 B747’s. Apparently Cathay Pacific are interested in purchasing the 747’s.
Anyone heard anything more on this?

If I’m not mistaken, GE is the only powerplant for the 777-300ER. The non-ER version uses all 3.

??? Can you power the 777 also with GE engines? BA always go for Rols Royce.
I doubt this would be a good choice… The 777-300 loads just 25 seats less then the 747-400.

They have 57 744s and have never sold any of them yet, although like Sandy says 15 are expected to go, possible to Cathay. BA wouldn’t be able to afford the planes as such, although I know very few airlines that buy their planes outright rather than either leasing them, or borrowing the money in the first place.
Whether it would be a good idea to add to their mountain of debt is a different question though…

That would be a good idea, but do they have the money for it? How luch 747-400’s did they have, and how many are sold?

Yup, this has been on the cards for a while now. BA still have a vast amount of options on the 777 fleet, operations do not now justify 57 747-400s considering a number of these are parked up at Heathrow anyway, capacity reduction and fleet modernisation is now the order of the day.

Exactly as I predicted in a thread a few weeks ago.
Yes I’ve heard this before.
Ba were planing to order the 777-300 to replace 15 older 744’s in 2001, but 9/11 happened and put a halt on these plans.
With BA getting back on its feet, it would seem quite possible these plans are put back on the front burner
