Ams 14/02/04

Today is one of my last days as an unemployed person, and I figured i’d go to the airport to celebrate! The weather was expected to be overcast but dry. We got just that, but it was very humid making for some very cool vapour and contrail shots!

my first shot of a KLM 777

From the spot i made these photos of a 100mm will be enought for planes the size of DC10 and more. Just side-on though or perhaps at a slight angle for the 747s and A340s

If this runway is used for landings you can get into the final approach. There 100mm will be enough for everything including the dorniers and ATRs.

The spot near the taxiway is also very good for people with a small lense, but don’t expect many heavies here. The only heavies here are cargo planes. Other then that lots and lots of KLM Cityhopper Fokkers and most European airlines.

Check my website in the sig for more on spotting at Schiphol. It is getting quite complete now!

BTW, my camera is a Sony F717. It has a lense of 38-190mm. The digital zoom can double that, but i never use it.

You can take shots from the observation deck with that kind of zoom. Those take off pics that Peter has posted is adjacent to one of the main runways, you can probably get away with it with the bigger jets. I have a 100-300 but really can’t remember how much of the macro I was using. There’s another spot where you see most of the narrowbodies taxiing over a bridge where you don’t need that much power. I would contact Peter and see what he is up to, even though he has a job now. He took me to all the spots. If you do wind up doing that, be prepared to do a lot of walking.

Whee! Ok I’m coming to Amsterdam soon! I only have 115 mm zoom 🙁 that’s probably WAY too less, are there any places wherre this is enough?

Great shots Peter. Taken from my favourite spot, no doubt. Good to still see NW Trijets.

Great Shots Pete! The first two are excellent! All have a nice effect in them caused by the weather.

Nice one! 🙂

no i mean 200mm in “optical zoom”, and yes i did need the full extent of it. And for the smaller planes up to 300mm would be handy.

And did you have to use the full extent of your zoom for those pics? 50-200mm is around 10X in ‘optical zoom’ terms isn’t it?

The 777 went to Nairobi.

There are indeed excellent places to shot photos at Schiphol. You have already seen my site, another site you can try is www.schipholview.nl. They are really informative as well.

My camera has a zoom of 50 to 200mm, or thereabouts. The 3rd shot, the Martinair 747, was done with more by cropping a large resolution photo. It does show though as the quality is less than the others.

Nice pictures! Particularly the first KLM 777 and the last KLM MD-11. How much zoom do you use to get the pictures like that?

Peter, love those pics, especially 1/9 the 777. Hopefully when the weather picks up I’l try and make a day trip to Amsterdam for some photo’s. I presume there are good photo oportunities around AMS judging by your excellent array of photo’s on here and your website ?

Thanks Airline-Owner for your remark. I don’t know where this plane is flying too, not yet anyway. I am looking it up, but the Schiphol website is today even slower than it normally is.
