bmibaby is coming to London Gatwick!!

bmibaby have today announced 2 new routes to be served from London Gatwick. The 2 destinations are from 30th April 2004:

Prague (Daily)
Cork (Daily)

In bmibaby’s first press release it said it would be the only low cost operator on both routes from London Gatwick. Hours later they released another press release saying they were already entering a price war after easyJet announced there new London Gatwick to Prague route. Original one way fares to both destinations were £23.99 but now the Prague route is being sold at £19.99 one way to undercut easyJet’s fares by £1.

Tony Davis, managing director of bmibaby, said:

“After only a few hours, customers are already seeing the benefits of new low-cost airline competition at Gatwick. We’re delighted to be the cause of these benefits – and we look forward to delivering real competition to easyJet at the airport.”

Bookings can be made at 10am from Friday 13th February.

Does this mean London Gatwick is going to be bmibaby’s 5th U.K base?

Its certainly been good news today for low cost travel in the London area!!

Don’t forget bmibaby are also now offering you the ability to select your own seat on the flight during the booking process!!!

If its anything like Canjet (which I’ve recently booked on), using Navataire airline reservations, it shows you a seat map of the aircraft at the end of your booking and you can literally select the exact seat, not just a preference!

I think the whole EZY concept of jump on board as fast as you can and grab a seat is rather tacky, and people don’t like it. Its the little things that make you loyal to an airline, and price obviously!

As long as WW stick with undercutting EZY, they’ll be fine.

Incidentally, I have a strong feeling these LGW routes will be W patterns operated by EMA crew from what I’ve heard.

I think bmibaby could be successful by introducing some services from London Gatwick which arent served by easyJet e.g : Jersey, Teesside, Manchester, Murcia, Bordeaux, Knock, Paris CDG, Milan Bergamo etc etc

Suprised to see that BA are flying to Prague from Gatwick, when did they announce the route? Is it in addition to the Heathrow services?

They are commencing new routes from MAN to Bordeaux, Jersey, Knock, Paris CDG and Ibiza. From MME, they are commencing routes to Alicante, Jersey, Prague, Nice, and Palma.

I was quite impressed with them when I flew with them in May to MJV. I somehow think that with EZY established there, WW are going to provide tough competition but EZY will win.

I dont really get the point of BMI baby,BMI’s fares themselves out of LHR are the cheapest there and similar to Easyjet to AMS etc. So why bother having a low cost branch when you are going semi low cost yourself???

It’d be nice if we could actually get into Gatwick to see em, or anything else for that matter.
