Airport bomb joke lands Brit in jail
A British student is in a Miami jail after allegedly telling a Miami airport security official she had bombs in her carry-on bag.
According to the arrest report, Samantha Marson, 21, placed her carry-on bag on the belt at a security check, telling a Transportation Security Administration screener: “Hey be careful, I have three bombs in here,” Miami-Dade police Officer Alan Trivett said.
Asked to repeat herself, Marson, originally from Bridgnorth, Shropshire, allegedly made the same statement twice more.
Marson was arrested for making a false bomb report and was taken to Miami-Dade County Jail, where she was still being held.
She will be released on bail if she can come up with a £2,700 bond.
Marson’s next court date was scheduled for February 6. Jail officials did not have information on whether she had a lawyer.
A Foreign Office official said they were aware of a British citizen being detained for making a false bomb report.
“We are beside ourselves with worry,” her father Jim Marson, 75, told The Sun. “She phoned at about 3am on Sunday and was hysterical.”
Mr Marson said the comments at the checkpoint must have been made in jest.
“I’m sure Samantha will accept that it’s a silly thing to say but she’s the sort of girl who might have thought it would make people laugh,” he said.

She did say it three times which must rank as one of the most stupid things anyone could do!
I’ve been to several airports recently with big warning signs at X-ray area saying “Do not joke about bombs”

Mike.
You are right to a point. But suppose this ‘stupid girl’ was actually a suicide bomber who just happened to pull the pin in a crowded terminal? They would be collecting body parts for a week. We don’t yet know what the punishment will be but the ‘crime’ is not an inconsiderable one. There can’t be many people stupid enough to do that and expect to get away with it.
No sympathy, she deserves all she gets. She made the decision to tell people she had a bomb, now she must face the consequences.

This girl is guilty of plain stupidity.
However, she would have got the point when the airline refused to carry her (which it most certainly would have done) and she had to splash out for another ticket (this would probably have cost her a fortune as she may well have needed to travel the same day if she was going home to renew her 90-day visa waiver). If the police wanted to make sure this happened all they needed to do was hold her overnight.
I do not believe that this stupid girl actually had any maliscious intent when she said this “funny” thing – it is more likely that she expected the guard to laugh with her. Because of this, I do not believe that a court appearance and a lengthy wait in jail for that appearance is warranted – it just seems to me that the punishment is way out of proportion to the crime.
Just my 2p.

Was in Edninburgh Airport last thursday. 2 Police officers aremed to the teeth walked past me moments after I entered the arrivals hall. And they made no attempt to hid it either, firmly holding their machine guns by the hand grip and barrel, in front of them.
Anyone who messes with them is in for a painfull lesson.
They had their machine guns, a pistol side arm, one of those extendable metal batons and body armour. Security with a capital S!!

I’m afraid it’s a sign of the times we live in, the silly girl sounds very immature

Yes I agree security is very tight these days but for good reason. I am sick of having people ‘down the pub’ commenting on how they feel threatened by armed guards at airports and baggage checks taking alot longer. The bottom line is unfortunately it’s the world we live in these days. Ideally we could live in a world without… lets say Anti Virus software or firewalls on our computers, but as there are a small section of people out thier hell bent on attempting to ruin lives/property etc for what ever reasons they believe. We can’t ultimately stop things like this, we merely can help to prevent them and if that means armed guards and “over active” baggage and security checks at airports then so be it. I and im sure you all agree that we are happy to “sacrifise” extra time at check in etc in the safe knowledge that our own and everybody elses safety is the utmost priority.
Thankyou for listning……. My appologies for getting on the soap box and babbling on…. just come home from pub …..

She should be detained for stupidity in ANY COUNTRY, not just the U.S. “Joking” about bombs is no laughing matter. Even non-aviation buffs are aware of the magnitude of 9/11, and how it affected security in every nation after the fact. If some American schmuck did the same thing in another country, I’d fully expect them to be arrested as well. Some people just don’t have a damn clue.

The reason she is being held is purely because it is a reasonable attempt to point out to the public how important it is to get this message accross. Harsh maybe, necessary yes.

A British woman is being held in a US prison after she joked with an airport policeman that she was carrying a bomb.
Shropshire student Samantha Marson triggered a security alert as she waited to board a British Airways flight from Miami back to Britain, The Sun reported.
The 21-year-old from Bridgnorth was asked what was in her rucksack and told officials she had a bomb.
She was taken into custody and within hours appeared before a judge who remanded her to a holding centre in the city, the newspaper said.
Her father Jim, 75, said: “We are beside ourselves with worry.
“She phoned at about 3am on Sunday and was hysterical.
“I’m sure Samantha will accept that it’s a silly thing to say but she’s the sort of girl who might have thought it would make people laugh.”
She had been in the US for three months with her American boyfriend and was returning to the UK to renew her visa, the paper said.
The Foreign Office said it was seeking more details of the case.
A spokeswoman said: “We have confirmed with the Americans that they are holding a British national and we are looking into it.”

I’m sure she is well aware of the stupidty of what she has said, Sending her to jail will make no difference. This is a classic case of someone needing a good talking to, not a custodial sentence. Just goes to show how irony is lost on some more than others.

I think you’ll find that bomb jokes have always been treated this seriously. However, I know this because I’m interested in aviation. Your average Joe Public probably doesn’t. One solution would be large warning signs in the airport explaining the seriousness of the situation and the true gravity of making such flippant remarks. Even better would be occassional public service announcements on TV.

American Security personel just can’ t take a joke anymore, just a chat with her so she understands it is quite serious and utter inappropriate, don’ t take her to court, won’ t solve a thing.
