Turkish Airlines new aircraft

From Reuters:
Turkish Airlines to acquire 19 new aircraft
ISTANBUL, Dec 31 (Reuters) – Turkey’s flag carrier Turkish Airlines (THY) (THYAO.IS: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Wednesday it had decided to acquire 19 new aircraft and lengthen leases on existing planes.

The company said in a statement to the stock exchange that it had authorised its purchasing board to start work on acquiring the 19 new planes and additional options on three regional aircraft.

With the leases on some aircraft expiring in 2006, the THY board has decided to lengthen those on eight Boeing 737/400s and not to renew leases on two Boeing 737/500, the statement said.

It did not specify which new planes it would acquire.

THY General Manager Abdurrahman Gundogdu has previously said the company planned to use leasing for some 60 percent of its planes and buy the rest, to keep the fleet’s make-up flexible.

The airline now has 65 planes and expects to need around 100 to meet flight demand in future. But it plans to maintain a conservative stance and remain just below this total.

The current Turkish Airlines fleet consists of 12 Airbus (EAD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) (EAD.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) aircraft, 42 Boeings (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , as well as three RJ-70 and eight RJ-100 BAE Systems (BA.L: Quote, Profile, Research) regional jets.

No aircraft types are given but I suspect possibly some 737NG aircraft for short haul if the leases are not being continued on older 737 aircraft? Heard rumours about the 717 as well?

For medium/long haul I would be willing to say that the A330 could be an aircraft of interest to THY. It would have commonality with the current A340 fleet and THY would be able to place the A330 on flights to Europe and long haul flights to America or the Far East depending on demand. Also, those A310s are getting older, I think some have already left the fleet, so the A330 seems like a perfect replacement.

Anyhow, my last post for this year 😉

They can’t be losing money either, considering it’s built alongside and uses pretty much the same parts as the rest of the NG family, of which the -700 and -800 has sold bundles.

yes…thats why sometiems airline changes order like from -700 to -800 and there is no real big deal for Boeing.

Still, I dont think Boeing is making profit on the -900 project.
