I used Boeing 767-200ER for a night flight from London’s Terminal three, stand F28 Medium, to Johannesberg International, South Africa.

Departure time : (planned) 2210 (actual) 2208
Arrivial (divesion to HRE) : (planned at Jhbg) 0850 (actual) 0924 (HRE) Harare-Johannesberg departs 0750 on 26/12/03.

We departed early after a quick taxi just after a Orbit 737 took off for Stuggart and a World Travel 747 landed from Washington/Dulles. It was a smooth takeoff and we retracted the gear quickly, heading 157 to VOR SFD, which we reached at 2218. The flight was going fine untill en-route at Paris airspace when the plane had wing problems and was climimbing slowly, at Paris we were at around 19,000 feet instead of the assingned 33,000. I felt it safe to carry on the flight but the plane still climbed slowly so the ATC Controller at Paris gave warnings

“Springboc SA001 please ecxplidite your climb to flight level 330” about six times and then came
“Springboc SA001, Radar service terminated, follow manual path onto Johannesberg, maintain self navigation on class B airspace, new squak is 6224, gooday”
“Roger, Springboc SA001”

Then we were passed onto France centre where i decided to cruise at 27,000 feet as the plane became stable and i followed the path all the way to Lilongwe, Malawi with self-navigation and passing via Swiss, Algerian, Tunisian and Tanzanian air traffic controllers. 27,000 feet over Lilongwe, Malawi, fuel started to run low since the plane was using alot of thrust at high levels. We only had enough infact to last us untill Southern Mozambique. I slowed the plane so we passed our JHB arrival time of 0850. I surveyed the area on the GPS and Harare was the longest runway and closest airport, at 15,000 feet with ILS and about 300 miles away. I started to slow the plane as we were handed to Johannesberg control, then i was at 9,000 feet for Harare (Zimbabwe) approach control, the speed was 198 Knots, fuel running out so i requested Visual approach. We touched down hard at Harare at 0922, stopping at the very end of its 15,000 foot runway. It was quiet, only a few Cessna’s on VFR and a MD-80 of Airwave to Libreville on the ground. The tower asked us to taxi to Stand B20 Heavy. We arrived there at 0924 and i shut down the engine on the ramp as a Pacifica MD-80 taxied in to a gate near my 767. When i had stopped, the fuel cosumption totaled 92%!.
I think i will do HRE-Joberg tommorow on Air Zimbabwe 767-200ER i have. Overall, a good flight, even if we landed at a city 600 miles away from our original destenation, we flew 4,900 miles closer to it!.

I will pilot this plane next
