Looks like Stansted is gonna get the new runway

After months, if not years of controversy, it looks like the South-East runway argument has been concluded. This does not ,however, mean the arguments are over, particularly when it comes to anti-expansion campaigners. It seems like LHR has definately been ruled out for extra runways, and the proposal for more at Stansted is going ahead. I can asuure you though, that eventhough this BBC statement doesn’t seem to recognise it, there is a lot of arguments against building them at STN. With me living in the closest town to the aiport, just 3 miles away, I know many people that are against this, including large local newspaper campaigns. I’m not all that bothered by it, as hopefully it will bring more airlines and more routes to the area, aslong as they don’t over expand like they tried to do too quickly at LHR.

Taken from the BBC website:
Air pollution laws will prevent a new runway being built at Heathrow for at least another decade, according to a newspaper report.
Stansted provides the only realistic option for a proposed new runway in the South East, says The Times.

To cope with the predicted increase in air travel, the government is considering new runways at Heathrow in west London, Stansted in Essex, Gatwick in Sussex or a new £9bn airport at Cliffe in Kent.

The plans have provoked huge opposition among those living in the affected areas.

But Heathrow will be ruled out until airport operator BAA has dealt with the high levels of pollution around the airport – which is unlikely to be until 2016 or later, according to The Times.
