European planemaker Airbus says it expects to sell 50 of its A380 super jumbos, the world’s largest passenger aircraft, to Chinese airlines in the next five years.
The confident forecast came from the company’s chief commercial officer John Leahy after he signed a deal for four of the company’s long and mid-range A330-200s with China Southern Airlines.
“While 129 A380s have been sold worldwide, we are hopeful that by the 2008 Beijing Olympics some A380s will be flying in Chinese colors,” Leahy told the China Daily newspaper.
Mr Leahy also said China is expected to need 1,600 aircraft in the next 20 years.
China is seen as the next big battleground between Airbus and its US rival Boeing. The American company had predicted that China will need up to 2,300 planes in the next two decades and will be pinning some of its hopes on its new 7E7 Dreamliner currently in development.
