British Airways "engine-less" 767

Hi,

After browsing the Airliners.net forum, I came across a topic about the British Airways aircraft (G-BNWC) which sits outside a hangar at Heathrow, without any engines.

I’m not entirely sure of the situation with this wonderful 767 aircraft, but then I found out it was in storage in the Mojave Desert for quite some time.

It would seem it returned at the start of the Summer but never actually came back into operation, having it’s engines torn off and left, abandoned, next to an in-tact British Airways 737-400, at Heathrow.

Does anyone know why it was put into storage in the first place, how long it was there and whether or not it will have new engines installed… or is this the end for the aircraft?

in a similar fashion the EAL 747 G-BDXH has been sitting around with number 2 engine missing for a while now at LGW… presumably they don’t hold a float of spare engines so are waiting for the ‘broken’ one to be sorted out ??

I thought it looked very intersting engineless at LHR last week but agreeably better with it’s flight gear attached.

Not quite so sure why you say that?

The 767 has a claim to fame. It has been the most common Atlantic crossing aircraft ever. It’s a great airline in my opinion and one that still has plenty of years left in it.

and it probably doesn’t perform quite so well without the engines either… 😀

I think any plane looks bad with no engines!

Thanks for the information.

It’s in a bit of a state as I we saw last week. I’m not sure that just over 4 days is going to be enough to get it back into the skies again. It seems such a shame to see my favourite aircraft, grounded! 🙁

Well I got a very quick reply: She hasn’t actualy re-entered service yet! Her first flight is scheduled for the 1st October (At 0630z!) however this is subject to change, and she may not come in until the 26th, which is the start of the winter schedules.

The 767’s have been being used by BA very extensively recently. I am surprised that they would bring her back from the desert and then not use her, storing her at Heathrow. There is no information on her anywhere that says that she is non-operational, but I have asked someone who fly’s the 767’s for BA what is happening.

We saw it at the LHR meet.

Perhaps it is the end of the road for it, and they have taken the engines off to use on another aircraft?
