Class 1 Medical

I have my class 1 medical coming up on October the 8th and although I have received a letter from the CAA telling me what to expect it doesn’t really give me much of an idea of what is going to happen.

Can any of the pilots please tell me what I’m in for 😀

Martin, It’s been quite a few years since I did my initial Class 1 and unfortunately I can’t remember a great deal about it. I gather that now they will do a full cholesterol check as part of the blood test but that shouldn’t trouble you like it bothers us oldies, the ‘cheese and wine’ brigade! Don’t let it worry you too much as there should be no problems at your age other than the hole it will leave in your wallet. I presume you are going down to the Belgrano for your check?

411 Pounds!!! My class 1 medical cost about AUD$149, which equates to 61 Pound Sterling on the currency converter. It was pretty thorough, just like my Navy medical, but CASA’s fees for medicals are quite low compared to JAA, etc. Anyway Martin, have fun strapping into all the wierd and wonderful machinery that’s called medical diagnostic equipment, just make sure you get to use the machine that goes PING!!! (I couldn’t resist the reference to Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life!)

A very thorough going over. My one abiding memory of my initial Class 1 medical was the EEG (electro-encephologram – hope that’s spelt correctly). Your head is wired up with electrodes and then your brain responses to various stimulants (strobes etc) are measured. When I asked what this all achieved, I got the commendably honest response “Don’t know mate, but if you ever bang your head, we’ll do another one and see if there is any change”.
Seriously, as long as you are in good general health, should be no problem (except to your bank balance – what’s the fee these days?)
