I read in the newspaper yesterday that they are considering making air traffic control automatic, where a computer will choose what to tell the pilot. Anyone else have any more information on this? Scary and bad idea in my opinion.

bad idea.
it will be just like trying to put a permanent autopilot in the cockpit, and getting rid of the human – people i.e. the passengers, won’t feel safe in the air without knowing that there is a human up front. putting your life in the hands (or should i say microprocessors) of a computer isen’t very comforting, especially if there is the risk of it failing,

Sounds quite a bad idea. What if the computer system should fail? There would be panic and a rush to get the skies under control – then who would take control because the computer controlled system would not require air traffic controllers.
But based on the Peter X incident which many of us saw on BBC2 last weekend, it could be a slightly safer approach and completely prevent mid-air collisions.
