First TU 154 or II62

What ever happened to the prototype Russian Airliners like the II62 or the TU 154 and others
Are they preserved somewhere like the Boeing prototypes, or are they just scrap metal: Anybody Know???????

I would give my right arm……. hang on…… I would give my left arm to go to Monino to see those a/c.
I can only go on what I find out on the web, I too would be interested to see if its there, although I have done alot of research on this… (how sad am I? Have I nothing better to do?) I cant find a Tu154 at Monino on any web site.

I’d be very interested to know if you see the Tu154 because the info that I have is that it should be there.

Good picture of the layout although it is not showing the whole site and some of the aircraft were in different positions in 2001.
I have that picture on the guidebook so I think it is the standard shot of the museum.

The Tu154 was parked in an area off the top left of the picture, along with the Tu144, Su25 (underneath) Il62, Yak 40 Yak 42, IL18, Tu124, Tu104.

I will see next week when I am there 😉

The prototype (CCCP-85000) was built at the “Opyt” factory in ’68. It was transported disassembled to Zhukovskij (spelling?)where after reassembly and ground trials it took off for the first flight (pilot Yuri Sukhov) on 3rd Oct ’68. As a matter of historical interest, one of the first five Tu-154 (CCCP-85007) continued its service with Vnukovo until the end of ’93 when it was retired.

Interflug…. I have had a look at Monino Museum website and they havnt a TU154 on display…. there is one at Vdnkh Museum(???)

This is the Tu-145 prototype CCCP-85000 in ’69

According to the book “Tupolev-The man and his Aircraft” published by Airlife (an excellent book by the way) the TU154 was Tupolevs first truly non military derived aircraft. It does not say wether any of its on board systems have military ancestry though which may of course be the case as in the “West”.

As far as I am aware the prototype Tu154 is located at the Monino museum just outside Moscow. The prototype IL62 was last reported some years ago at the then Ilyushin complex in Kazan in a semi derelict state. The only two Soviet airliners that were directly descended from bomber designs were the Tu104 which was a derivative of the Tu16 Badger and of course the beautiful Tu114 Cleat long range turboprop airliner descended from the Tu95/Tu20 Bear. I guess you could say that the Tu124 and Tu110 designs were again descended from the Tu16 but were “2nd generation designs” from the original. Sorry kabir but the Tu154 has never had a direct military connection and was a “clean sheet” design, although the Tu134 is a modification/evolved version of Tu124 which I suppose loosely ties it to Tu16.

According to my long out of date russian transports book the 5th prototype 154 was preserved in a Moscow park, I think along with a early Yak 42. There were also some early IL 18’s, and TU134’s at tech schools.I know there are some preserved aircraft at one of the Moscow airports. Trouble is over there the weather is not exactly good for parking aircraft outside!
Aaah the ‘row in the 80’s LOT TU134’s, TAROM IL6s’s,Balkan 154’s, and Gatwick with still a few IL18’s.

I’m sure Arthur from the military forum will know more! I thought all the russian aircraft prototypes went to a museum, forgotten the name… but it’s a big place!

TU 154 was actualy first designed as a bomber……..its wings are still those which were designed for a bomber. So TU 154s first prototype was a bomber.
