Strike

Does anyone know much more about the BA strike?

It seems irregular that a strike would take place over something like internal procedures.

The logic of it all is still utterly beyond me.

Most airline employees will bad mouth the likes of Ryanair over a beer. And yet, despite much better conditions with BA, they are prepared to unilaterally break the law and threaten their own futures.

I’m afraid if I was CEO, there would be riot police arresting all those staff members and the legal team would be ensuring they spent a decade behind bars, with their houses reposessed if possible. They don’t deserve to wear “British” on their uniforms.

Where’s Scargill 🙁

AF is not a private company though. BA has to stand on its own two feet.

BA are now saying the resolution of the strike is crucial to the survival of the airline. With their only bare profitability and the downgrade of their debt to “junk” status I wouldn’t especially think that notion is hyperbole.

Anyone changing their opinion?

got an email from them this morning, saying everything’s back to normal…

Subject: British Airways London Heathrow Disruption Update
To: ******

Dear Mr Breckenridge

As you will be aware, British Airways has been experiencing major disruption at London Heathrow Terminals 1 and 4 since Friday.

The disruption was caused by unofficial industrial action at London Heathrow regarding the introduction of a new swipe card system. We continue to be in extensive talks with the staff groups and union representatives involved and are striving to resolve this as soon as possible.

As at 3pm, Wednesday 23 July 2003, London Heathrow Terminals 1 and 4 are now operating as normal, as are all other UK and worldwide airports.

If you are travelling in the next few days please visit http://ba.com for the most up to date information.

If your travel plans were affected during this time, we unreservedly apologise.

Yours sincerely,

Dale Moss
Director of Sales Worldwide

I note that they don’t mention that two of the three Unions are about to ballot their members about a strike, and the remaining Union has refused to rule out a ballot.

PS if they reckon pasting it onto this board is unlawful, I’m sorry, but the public should be told.

My coworker got stuck at Heathrow in the labour disruption. He said that T4 was absolute chaos, and it was only a three hour disruption. People were missing their flights, children were lost, families were camped out like refugees. People were pushing into one another. Paramedics were all around. He said that the terminal seemed to have no idea what to do. When BA realized that people were missing their flights they started walking around with signs for SFO, YYZ, “flight leaving in 15 mins.”, and then masses of people would move all at once. One couldn’t get into shops, or even read a paper in comfort.

He arrived home a day late as a result.

It’s interesting to note how easy it is to create global chaos in places like JFK, LHR, CDG when you think of people missing work, meetings, gatherings, etc..

He said that the flights on BA were great.

Aye, except that the Unions are now threatening to ballot members about official strike action.

I was caught up in the mayhem last time BA had a major strike, 6 years ago, when cabin crew staged a three day walkout.

It seems to be all sorted now at T1. My Dad flew out to Rome on Monday, and back again yesterday with no problems on either flight.

My check in friend is coming for lunch tomorrow so I will find out more. Good job the new working conditions haven’t been enforced yet or they could make her lose her day off with no notice and ruin my lunch! It takes a brave man to come between me and my lunch!

I was told by a BA T1 check in agent this afternoon that the reason the strike was so sudden was because they were told it would be ‘implemented tomorrow’! Nothing like a good bit of notice or negotiation.

BA recently made an application to the CAA to have their cabin crew compliment reduced BELOW the legal minimum. The CAA laughed them out of town! It’s not often I think the CAA have done well!
