Spotters Utopia

It looks like Amsterdam Schipol is a spotters paradise, anybody been there or heard about this spot?

You can buy that on the place near the S-apron as well. There is a mobile snack-shack. I do not know if it is there every day, but most of the times it is! They are rather expensive though!

Yeah, but you can buy a hot dog and beer on the observation deck 🙂

Thanks for the info,

I was at the observation deck a couple of years ago, great views but ot so good for action photography, I prefer to be near the runway.

To make life easier, here is a map with all the spotters vantage points. The place described is nr 6, a little to the north following the road you see the S apron. However, you only get a handfull of aircraft here, and mostly Martinair. Don’t forget the observation deck in the terminal, no glass, no gates, just hundreds of meters of unopstructed views of the aircraft arriving and leaving the gates. BW Roger

To get to this spot by public transportation you should take bus 191/193/198 from Schiphol center. These stop just outside the main terminal on the ground floor (arrivals).

Take the bus with the direction Aalsmeer/Uithoorn (via parking area P30). This bus should take you in about 15 to 20 minutes to the bus stop “Aalsmeerderweg”. This includes a +/- 5 minutes stop at P30.

At “Aalsmeerderweg” there is a crossing. Look in the direction of the bus you were just on. When looking in that direction you see a road leading to the left (roughly parralel to the runway). Go into this road. After about 15 minutes you will be at the spot.

There are 2 spots here. There is the official one, complete with a mobile snack shack. This is a nice place, but if you walk 5 minutes further you will be where yuo really want to be! There you will have the view over the S-apron. Here to you will have a view of the planes landing/taking of. You do not need a long lense here, 150 mm usually serves me well for even some of the smaller types.

Just give me an e-mail by the time you are going to Schiphol. If I have a day of (and the weather ain’t terrible 🙂 ) I’ll show you around!

Roger – Great shots

tenthije / Roger – The spot next to the runway you mentioned was accessible by Public Transport. How would I get from the terminal to here?

I’m considering AMS for a daytrip in the summer.

From the same place, half a minute later, I shot this Dornier. A 200 or 300 mm lens is enough here, but I used “the big one” again. Weather was lousy that afternoon.BW Roger

Shot this MD-11 from the small gate seen in the 747 shot, the day the AN-22 was there (2 weeks ago). Could have used a 28-70, but as my 500 mm was on my camera I had to use that one. BW Roger

Seeing the planes come by this close is indeed not common, as Roger mentioned. On the plus side, this spot also overlooks runway 24/06. This is the place were all those famous action shots are made from.

And some more from the taxiway leading to the S-ramp.

I come there quite often. It is actually possible to go there using public transportation, but you will have to walk the last 15 or so minutes. A walk well worth it!

On a good day you can see 20 or so cars parked alongside the road. When the AN-22 came by there were a lot of cars.

I tried to edit the pictures to show up a few times. Needless to say it did not work.

Was there yesterday, no problem apart from being the fact that this is the taxyway that links the S (freight) platform with the rest of the airport, so don’t expect to shoot many aircraft from here. Bw Roger
