Reversing from gate

I came across a picture of an Air Tran 717 using its reverse thrusters to clear the gate. Is it common practice in the US, i know it’s a big NO/NO in this Country

Slim possibility but the Americans do like to do this quite a lot.

Maybe he’s actually trying to stop, as if his brakes failed!

Not such a problem on a turboprop. Tail mounted jet engines such as the F100 are plenty capable of throwing up enough FOD to damage an engine.

There is a feature in the current ‘Pilot’ magazine by a pilot flying Twin Otter turbo prop aircraft from Glasgow to the famous beach airport at Barra. He backs out from between two 737s using Beta drive with an engineer walking behind. Not only the other passengers but the flight crews stare at the sight. Just one thing to remember he says “Don’t use the brakes to stop, or you will sit the aircraft back on its tail”!

I thought that practice was illegal in the states, as well. I assure you, none of the bigboys do that.

Well, I can see how that might happen on a 737 where the engines practically scrape the ground. But not on a 717 with the high engine mounting?

Wasn’t using thrust reverse at the gate part of the reason for that 737 coming down in the Potomac. (spelling?)
Something about blowing snow and ice into the pitots and engine sensors.

A fantastic technique for increasing maintenance requirements by blowing stones, etc into the intakes. It only seems to be done by jets in America.
