Holiday Airline

I don’t know if anyone else is watching it, but is it me or is the intro to Holiday Airline possibly one of the most tacky bits of television production in history!!! 😛

Well said Duesseldwarf, I completely agree. I’ve often felt there is quite a lot of hostility in the forums towards Ryanair, but my personal opinion of Ryanair is a very positive one. I’ve flown with them several times and they have always been very good, in fact sometimes I’ve felt I got more than I paid for, especially when I’m paying just 1p for a flight!

Ryanair have been very helpful in my career progression and as I have said in the past they look like the most likely prospect for me when I graduate from flight school and I must say it is an airline I would be proud to fly for.

Quite agree with all that. Richard Branson seems to as well, if you read his speech on the news section of airlinerworld.com

Having just watched the program featuring Ryanair, I think that MOL was nothing other than honest about Ryanair’s tactics and business model. Fair play to him I say. Everyone knows that they don’t always fly to the closest airport to the cities they serve, that is one of the many many reasons they are cheaper as stated in the program (but is also common sense). Everyone knows that they are ruthless and unsympathetic when mistakes are made by passengers. Why do people book? First of all they are cheap. Secondly, the chance of anything going majorly wrong is quite slim – just like it is with any other carrier.

I have flown with Ryanair on over 30 flights to date and the worst thing that has happened, thus far, is that a timing change meant I could no longer travel on a daytrip and I had to get my money reimbursed (just like I would have done with any other carrier). We also made a booking error on one occasion and lost our money (£60) – but it was our fault at the end of the day! As a mini-protest at the lack of sympathy, I decided I would no longer purchase anything onboard another Ryanair flight. Well, my pride told me to do SOMETHING! Other than that, it’s been the usual weather delays. Nothing any airline can do about the weather now, is there?

With Ryanair alone, I have travelled abroad 10 times this year to cities all over Europe. I would be a complete bloody hypocrite to say that I don’t like them, when I keep booking flights with them!! Without Ryanair, there are many cities/countries I would never have visited – and I have not had an unpleasant trip yet. I, for one, hope that Ryanair continue to open up more destinations that are not served by the low cost boys as I fully intend to take advantage of the fares whilst I am living in close proximity to their main UK base.

I work for an airline and although the industry is a bit un-nerved by the low cost boys, I am still able to see that Ryanair are not villains – they are simply innovators. Why should a successful company be slated just for being successful? Jealousy? If I worked in any other industry, I wouldn’t even think of Ryanair as anything other than heroes. Most would miss them if they weren’t there.

Dean.

Yes, my Irish friends do swear a bit more than other people I know! Must be all that religion.

I think it’s a by product of being Irish, all my cousins swear frequently without even knowing it. I even heard their village priest at it during mass as a child ! 🙂

(I’m no moaner about swearing or copulation on tv programmes, but when he was representing his company at 1930 on tv, I was a bit shocked).

I think the Airport show on MIA must have been a repeat. They do tend to go off on a tangent sometimes. If I want to watch the DEA in action, I’ll watch another programme.

Still, nice to see someone showing an aviation programme that isn’t about either aerobatics or the USAF for once, a la Discovery bloody Wings!

I saw both BBC programmes last night, first off, the Money Programme programme about Ryanair.

It followed a reporter flying from London to Brussels (in his words), showing where Ryanair were saving along the way (booking, fares, aircraft price, using Stansted, check-in, turn around time, arriving), interspersed with interviews with Michael O’Leary, and highlighting some of the key differences to BA (travel agents/seat allocation/catering), who also had a Marketing guy Interviewed, followed by someone from the EC who was talking about some of Ryanair’s more dubious policies (eg the small print for their baggae insurance if damaged doesn’t cover any bags with protruding parts (eg handles, wheels)).

All in all, it was a pretty interesting programme, offering a balanced view of the pro’s and con’s of flying low cost.

Then, Airport USA was certainly an insightful look into operations at Miami, but there was a certain obsession with the DEA. Also, does an airport programme really have to follow some guy around the Harbour trying to slow boats down because of Sea Cows? (Sure, interesting to mention in passing, but we cut back to him at least once more later in the programme for an update on speeding.)

Did anyone see last night’s Miami Airport special on BBC-1. It did have some nice aircraft footage including air to air, but I take Wys’s point about there being too much non aviation content.

The Miami show included feature’s on the DEA doing downtown drug busts and the “offshore” branch of Miami’s finest, busting speeding boat owners.

Also did anyone watch the Ryanair programme on BBC-2 ? I missed it, or rarther I caught the last 60 seconds or so. Was it any good, anyone got a tape ?

I think ITV’s product is far superior to the BBc’s. At least the ITV product has remembered to include at least a few irems about aviation! BBC only seem to be interested in duty free, customs and photographers!

I was mightily impressed that the A330 only burnt 1 extra tonne of fuel crossing the pond at FL280 as opposed to FL380.

To be honest it put me off travelling Monarch. A shoddy excuse for an aviation programme. Until ITV reach the standard of BBC’s Airport, I will not be watching it.
I though the A330 captain was very pleasent though…
