I agree with Dean and the rest, FS9 with your machine is best and for the time being at least is still reasonably well supported by the independant suppliers including some pretty good scenery.
However, it will certainly not be cost effective to buy a new computer, or even update an old one unless you intend then to get FSX. But for that, you really do need a quad core(Q6600 or better), 4GB RAM (or more) and a 1GB nVidia 8800 (or better) graphics card and lastly a 64x Windows Vista OS.
I would say too that if you have the money for all that, FSX is the way to go. It is so much better than FS9 that there’s really no comparison and far more widely supported with addons of real scenery available, much better specified aircraft and weather effects like clouds and water etc.etc.
