Conservation work begins on Newark Shackleton

Newark Air Museum’s magnificent Avro Shackleton is set to receive restorative work this summer

A scaffolding system was erected around the nose and forward fuselage of Avro Shackleton MR.3 WR977 at Newark Air Museum on July 25. It will enable the Nottinghamshire attraction’s team of skilled volunteers to begin the significant task of restoring and repainting the aircraft.

The work is set to start with sealing of the cockpit glazing along with in-depth cleaning. These tasks will be followed by the conservation and painting of the Shackleton’s forward section. It’s hoped to keep WR977’s cockpit open to the public for most of this period. Contributions received for onboard visits will be added to the fundraising campaign to cover the scaffolding hire costs and weekly safely inspections. The work is expected to last ten weeks and is scheduled to be completed by mid-October.
