RSW terminal expansion project to begin in October

The $331m initiative is set to take three years to complete

The terminal expansion project at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) has been approved by the Lee County Board of Port Commissioners at a meeting held yesterday (September 21).

The project aims to focus on improving the hub’s efficiency by helping to streamline security checkpoints, adding concession space and proving passengers with a broader range of services.

Construction is planned to begin next month and is expected to take three years to complete. It is also the second largest public works project to take place in the county.

Specific plans consist of integrating TSA security checkpoints into new 16-lane configuration, whilst providing additional seating and a business lounge. This means a total of 164,000 sq ft of space is set to be remodelled.

“Southwest Florida International Airport is the front door to our community and supports travel, new business and tourism in our region,” said Kevin Ruane, chair of the Board of Port Commissioners. “We are pleased to start this essential project that will enhance infrastructure and manage growth while vastly improving the passenger experience at RSW. It will also create hundreds of jobs for our local economy.”

Atkins North America are running the expansion project and it is being funded with grants from the Florida Department of Transportation, passenger facility charges, airport revenue bonds and construction funds
