TSA prepares for increase in traffic at Albany International

The director of the agency has said the airport is working under the “new normal” measures

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is preparing for a surge in passengers travelling from Albany International Airport.

According to the organisation, around 1.6 million customers are being screened daily which is an increase from last year. However, figures from 2019 show that 2.5 million were being screened on the busiest summer days.

“We are ready to handle the expected increase in travellers this summer,” said Bart Johnson, TSA’s federal security director for upstate New York.

“For those who plan to fly this summer, I’d like for them to be aware that the checkpoint experience will look different if they have not been to the airport since the start of the pandemic.”

An acrylic barrier situated at the check-in point has been implemented to reduce the likelihood of cross contamination. Routine cleaning procedures are also ongoing, as security staff disinfect frequently touched surfaces and screening equipment.

Johnson continues: “We have what I call a ‘new normal’ at airport security checkpoints since the start of the pandemic.”

Customers are required to place any personal items – such as wallet and keys – directly into their carry-on case to be scanned, instead of placing them directly into the tray to limit contact.

Health measures are still in place, such as the mandatory face coverings that must be worn on all aircraft and public transport.
