Shturmovik completed for museum display
Staff at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, were recently pictured with the National Air and Space Museum’s Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik, which has been completed within the Chantilly base’s Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar. The aircraft’s history is unclear, though it’s believed to have been built in late 1943 and shot down in the action around Leningrad in 1944. Brought down onto a lake, the stricken aircraft sank to the bottom where it remained until 1992. Initial restoration
