Support for Doncaster Sheffield reopening grows

Munich Airport International (MAI) the German airport’s management and consultancy arm, has been announced as a new strategic partner for Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA).

MAI will provide operational and management services and will be assisted by UK-based FP Airports, which specialises in providing “strategies for retaining viable aviation infrastructure”. The City of Doncaster Council has also established a new company, FlyDoncaster, to oversee the facility’s running as it gears up for its planned reopening in spring 2026.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport opened its doors to commercial flights in April 2005 but closed in November 2022 after the owners at the time, Peel Group, decided that the facility was no longer financially viable.

MAI managing director Lorenzo Di Loreto said that the firm was “proud to be part of the reopening of DSA” and planned on helping develop the facility “into a top modern and competitive airport”.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, who has been a key driving force behind the airport’s revival, stated: “Reopening our airport is my number one priority. Munich Airport International has the pedigree in the field of aviation. They share our ambition for a successful airport, and they bring a wealth of experience, capacity, and influence to work with us to deliver a thriving airport.

“The team at FP Airports has worked with us creatively to put together the right solution for DSA and we are confident that the reopening and future operation of Doncaster’s airport is in good hands.

“This major announcement that I am making today enables us to press ahead with the necessary airport mobilisation activity to see the airport – which I proudly call the people’s airport – to reopen in spring 2026.”
