Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar & Related Engines

In the hunt for anything related to the Grebe (see https://www.key.aero/forum/historic-aviation/nz501-gloster-grebe), the Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar Engine features strongly.

There isn’t a lot discussed about these engines, so thought I might spin my questions about this engine out into a new thread since then it is not constrained to purely Grebe related material.

The IWM has a couple of films listed as Assembling a Jaguar Engine, Dissembling a Jaguar Engine. Has anyone seen a digital copy of these?

Anyone got a survivors list for the Jaguar (or the related Lynx or Ounce) I have:

Jaguar

  • Science Museum, London, UK
  • DaneCock @ Danmarks Flymuseum

Lynx

  • South Australian Aviation Museum (running example)
  • Southern Cloud Memorial, NSW, Australia
  • In the Avro 626 @ RNZAF Museum, New Zealand
  • Sywell Aviation Museum, UK
  • Avro Tutor,  Shuttleworth, UK

Ounce

  • Powerhouse Museum, Australia

MAC314 – I have always found the people at the Coventry Archives respond within a few days to a basic query. The archive search function is good, however, you do need to open the hierarchy links to get the best from any search. My own queries have always been about the details of a return found within the data base. I have visited once and found staff to be very professional and helpful.

Thanks Oracal, Coventry Archives is now on our list of archives to investigate. Do you know what they are like to use (are they fast, cheap to use, etc, yes i am being optimistic!).

TEXANTOMCAT2 that was a very nice Ebay find, just shows what still out there. I will note the Siskin type Generator, I am not sure if the NZ grebes even had an electrical system as they were not fitted with navigation lights.

I tried using one of the AI search engines to search for Jaguar engines just in case it turned up something, more traditional methods didn’t, it promptly told me there was none left, which is clearly not the case as the growing list below shows.

I don’t see why one wouldn’t include the licence-built version, it doesn’t add a lot of engines., I had missed their existence.

Jaguar

  • DaneCock @ Danmarks Flymuseum

The National Museum of Flight have two Lynx IVCs from an Avro Ten in store. Also there’s a licence-built version of the Lynx in the Italian Air Force Museum at Vigna di Valle if that counts.

Yep we have a lovely Lynx at Sywell – its sectioned and fully working (ie when you turn the prop hub) and complete. Rather a nifty £750 ebay find 5-6 years ago actually upside down in someones back garden – it is even on its original engine stand….even the carb float has been sectioned. We do have a Siskin type Generator too…that might be available.

The RAF Museum has one of each.  There’s a Lynx at Hendon and a Jaguar IV* hidden away at Stafford.  Both of these were on loan to with Rolls Royce Heritage until a couple of years ago.

It may be worth contacting the Coventry Archives (part of the Coventry Transport Museum and the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum). They hold a large amount of things AS.
