Tie Identification

I was recently given this tie by the widow of a chap who was once a flight test observer with Napier, but I don’t think there is any connection with that company. Can anyone identify the aircraft type? I can’t match it with any existing aircraft or project, although my sources are limited. The tie was made by James Arnold of Macclesfield and is still in its cellophane wrapper.

I’m not so sure about the Arrow but there is a resemblance. The Gnat too, except that the tailplane would be visible in a head-on view.

It reminds me of the Avro Arrow.

I wasn’t aware of Napier Jewelery – an American company, hence the spelling – but it’s a strange coincidence that it has the same name as the UK engine company for which this chap worked. Otherwise, there doesn’t seem to be any connection.

Isn’t this tie related to Napier jewelery? Their emblem is, I think, an owl.

I suspect that the aircraft part of the logo is not intended to represent a particular aircraft and that the owl part is more significant.

The manufacturer of the tie ceased to exist in the mid 1990’s (having been incorporated in 1924) and so the tie predates that.

Thanks for the suggestions, chaps. Yes, it could be a Harrier but the fin is too tall. I’m not so sure it’s a unit emblem. I thought it could be a project which never materialised but I’ve yet to find a match for it.

With that tall fin, high wing and wing root marks, I would say a Tornado is the basis for a cleverly observed Christmas owl cartoon.  Certainly not Harrier, although are both designs a little late for Napier?   Certainly not TSR-2 either, which is another high wing, big engine intakes, that crossed my mind.
