Back in late 1964, Hawker Siddeley’s De Havilland Aeronautical Technical School announced the School’s plan to build a full size flying replica of the Airco D.H.1. Presumably the plan came to naught. Did it fail to get off the drawing board? If not, what progress was made and what became of that?

Did you make your visit to the De Havilland Museum and, if so, did that reveal any more on this subject?

I recall reading in my beloved copy of A.J. Jackson’s Dr Havilland Aircraft since 1909, that dh apprentices built a replica of some type. I thought it was a Hummingbird or Tiger Moth racer, but I am not sure. However, I believe it was before 1964. If not, might that replica have been a substitute for the DH. 1 project?
I don’t have it at hand, as I’m traveling. I am in London and have plans to visit the DH Museum next week.

I know Terry wanted to build one for the museum after they finished the Rapide but that was a few years back now.

How interesting! Does the DH museum have any info on the project? EDIT: I should have checked my Facebook feed!
Don’t recall that one, I was there ’65’ the jg3 was the one that was being worked on had a rolls continental engine if memory is correct (I wonder what happened with that one) , but if you get in touch with Terry Pankhurst at the D H museum he should be able to help as he was woodwork instructor at that time.

The source of the information is a letter (see below) written to Air Pictorial magazine and published in its November 1964 edition.

I’d not heard of this but I’m very curious to hear more! I’ll ask around on Facebook for info.
