Do217 hood??

Who can help me with the ID of this (I think hood or bonnet) part. Got it from some one who find this on his loft near a site where a Dornier Do217 crashed. Sadly can’t find any markings and or stamps.

Bazv ; Thank you very much for your contribution and the fantastic drawings. The Polish museum website was known to me but can’t find the record of the BMW801 engine. Sadly I must say that the hood not fit to this type of engine according to the drawing). I have options as two Do217’s crashed in the vicinity of east of Best (one 217E-4 1942 and one 217M-1 1943). As you probably know the 217M-1 have Daimler Benz 603a engines so maybe the hood is from that type of a/c???

Cheers,

Adrian

Nice drawing of the rear of the engine/accessory drives, the starter motor is right in the centre and number 35 is ‘seilumfuhrung fur anlasser kupp lungsmagnet’ which seems to mean something like ‘Cable bypass for starter clutch magnet’

You will get a better view on this website…

Assuming a BMW 801 engine – the electric starter is at the rear of engine  – Schwungcraft Anlasser is the Electric Starter,Anlasser Handantrieb is the Starter Manual Drive (Hand Starter).

Hi All, Firstly many, many thanks for all your comments, which is realy more than appreciated!!!

Farlamairframes; The first I did to look after markings and stamps when obtained. Can’t find anything which amazed me. However with a drawing, and refnrs I maybe know where to look for the markings etc. Bit disappointed as you said “second rib looked gold anodisted” as the site where it was found according the founder a Do217 crashed.
Shorty01 ; Could you send me a link where you found the panel??

1batfastard ; I have follow your link and see if I can find any contact details on him, but I see nothing. If you have the chance to get in touch with him and let him know about my “mission” that would be nice ; – )

Cheers,

Adrian

Judging by the word “Handstarten” on the hinged flap I would say that this is the access flap where the starting/winding handle for an inertial starter goes into the engine compartment. The shape of the top of the panel in the middle “motorkap best1” suggests this is a panel that sits behind the front engine cowling(s) and that the cowlings are circular in shape. Not sure how easy it would be to access the engines on a DO 217 for this type of starting though.

Looking on Google such a panel exists just forward of the leading edge on a DO 217. Not sure of it’s practicallity for starting all the way up there though.

In the underneath picture the second rib from the left looks gold anodised – which is a Junkers manufacturing activity.

Have a very close look at the sides and rivet edges for a faint number stamped in it. A torch and a magnifying glass always help.
