We are building a new Museum – Please help!

Hello again,

After 60 years, we have been granted extra land and have now embarked on our biggest project since saving the Beaufighter on the beach in 1962!

Moorabbin Air Museum is currently planning a massive – and we mean massive – redevelopment of the Museum facilities.

New land across the road will allow us to house the civilian collection (for the time being however it will allow us to finally get everything undercover) – and the complete redevelopment of the current site to house our military / naval collection (to give you an idea of our current state, we have around 26 aircraft in storage that we cannot put on display including the world’s oldest Beaufort, a Lincoln, a rare DC-2 and a DC-3, and a host of Australian made aircraft plus some last remaining survivors (original Black Cat Catalina, and last surviving Battle of Darwin P-40)

Also in the plans is a three storey Library, Research and Archive Facility. It’s no surprise we have one of the biggest archives in the Southern Hemisphere, however we have nowhere to properly house them, or make available for people worldwide. Think – 1300 boxes of archival material dating back to the 1900’s, over half a million microfiche and drawings, hundreds of uniforms and tens of thousands of slides, film and more.

So, we need help from all over the world! While we continue to lobby for funding for the project, we are humbly asking anyone around the globe to help us achieve our goals. The total project cost is around $20m AUD, but even if we focus on the archive (which is $1.5mAUD) it’s a major start (we have raised around $30K in the last week 😀 ) In helping us, we can achieve a rare goal of having the Beaufighter and Beaufort alongside each other, and the DC-2 and DC-3 in same configuration.

SO! If you can contribute anything – please – the Museum. would be eternally grateful 😀 Especially towards the archive as we are about to receive one of the most significant and important collections ever – this person’s lecturer was Barnes Wallace, that should give you an idea….

Thanks so much for the support! Means the world to us, and allows us to work on getting a lot of aircraft out and displayed that we can’t do at the moment.

Plus our archive has some incredibly rare materials – Like a collection of Flight magazine going back to Issue1, 1909, or Janes All The Aircraft going back to1935, or even the one below – original edition of Travels in the Air from 1876!

Getting these buildings done will preserve the whole collection undercover for the first time in the Museum’s 60 year history, and allow a proper, purpose built research, library and archive centre.

Link is in original post – thanks again 😀 Flight 1909
