Odd ww2 Luftwaffe markings ?

In a combat report of May 10th 1942 P/O Lee of 236 Sqdn flying Beaufighter 1c T4917/K spotted a Dornier 217 flying at sea level. He gave chase and closed in to 150 yards and opened fire scoring hits. He was unable to continue the chase due to an engine problem but he noted the Dornier had a white fuselage roundel with a Black Maltese cross in the centre. He makes no mention of the usual black cross either on the wings or fuselage.

I have never heard of Luftwaffe aircraft carrying this type of insignia.

Has anybody any ideas?

Mmm I initially thought of the Portuguese Air Force but they were neutral in WW2 and I am not sure whether the current insignia was the same in WW2. I think an individual unit insignia is nearer the mark. Google images has a good selection but nothing specific to this particular aircraft. I am sure someone in this community with a superior knowledge of all things Luftwaffe will have the answer

Doubtful it was Bulgarian, he was operating over the North Sea/Dutch coast, this could have been a personal insignia such as a Wing Leader as suggested.

P/O  Lee did state that from a distance it looked similar to the RAF roundel which just confuses the issue even more.

Could this aircraft of had Bulgarian markings? as by 1942 the Bulgarians had become a ally of Germany so quite possibly a Bulgarian crewed aircraft
