At the National Museum of Bermuda is this unusual item which has defied identification. It COULD be a piece from an aircraft but perhaps somebody out there can identify it. When it was donated to the Museum many years ago, it was thought to be a piece from the RN Skua L2904 that crash landed on the island during a really bad day of flying from HMS Illustrious on 7th July 1940 but the story went cold a long time ago. I wrote about that eventful day in my book “Wings over Bermuda – 100 years of aviation in the West Atlantic”. Here is the passage.that relates to L2904. It looks like a spare wheel cover from an old 1930s car but the rivetting quality looks very aeronautical to me. Over to you….
– The last to have a go was Squadron Leader O.J.R “Roger” Nicholls in L2904. Again the arrester hook was torn out but Nicholls managed to get airborne again allowing him time to reassess his options. After signals were exchanged between Nicholls and Captain Boyd, he decided against ditching and set off towards the Mid Ocean Golf Club located in Tuckers Town where he clipped some cedar trees before crash landing on the 17th fairway and ending up on the 17th green. L2904 was badly damaged and was later dismantled before being moved by lorry to Dockyard where it was loaded aboard the Illustrious the following evening. Nicholls made history that day by being the first to “land” an aircraft on the island!
