B-17 escape axe?

Saw this at my local auction house. Obviously, recognise the axe in RAF use but was not aware that it was used by the USAF. Can anybody confirm that it was used by the USAF and if so who was the original designer.  The auction house is actually on the site of RAF Burtonwood so plenty of US aircraft passing through. No I did not buy it.
