An aerial viewpoint this afternoon of the B-17’s.   They sure look the part, from a distance.

A good bunch of photos here of the Fortresses and new control tower.

The attention to detail is very impressive .

It certainly would be nice if one of the excellent 8th Air Force museums benefited.

Wow, they really look the part. I wonder what the plans are for these after filming? Donation to UK museums perhaps?? One wouldn’t look out of place at Rougham, Parham, Seething etc.

I don’t have a problem with the use of CGI per se. I think when used correctly it’s fine, like the B24’s in Unbroken. However it has had some nightmarish outings see Red Tails. Large formations I think were always going to see CGI used.

Given that all or a large proportion of filming is taking part in the UK, I imagine that limits the number of B17’s which could be involved. I always thought it was unlikely we would see Memphis Belle numbers. I’m not sure how many operators in the US would be open to their aircraft flying over the Atlantic and being converted to suit the filming needs.

John Orloff, writer and executive producer, is on record saying they wanted to do as much for real as possible. So remains to be seen.

That does not seem to be in the public domain.  The planning applications for Abingdon suggest the filming there will be ground-based only.

The horrible suspicion I have is that flying sequences  will be mainly (gulp )…….CGI.

Ah thanks. I wonder when the flyer(s) will be involved in filming?

Your avatar provides a clue – required for a timeframe that was too long!

The market for the period aircraft they require is quite small too. I presume there’s one type in particular they are seeking

Some production companies have been desperately trawling for static ‘set-dressing’ aircraft since Christmas – often without success!

As a resident of South Bucks, presently about 12 fields north of Chalfont St Peter, I am amazed at the level of filming in this area, it is becoming like a movie theme park.

We have Leavesden ( ex airfield ) now a huge studio,  Elstree studios, Pinewood about 10 miles away,  filming back to back at Bovingdon airfield ( might as well call it a studio now ) . Marlow is presently a huge Star Wars set.  West of London and into the Thames valley is becoming Hollywood for the UK.

The stars no doubt love it because  you can be back in your suite at the Dorchester Hotel ( or wherever) by tea time, which would not be the case on location in Norfolk.

Have you ever been to Norfolk 🙂

I bet it was easier and cheaper to use the place they are using than try an sort out a number of landowners etc and post production people up there in a pandemic.

They can build it how they want also

Presumably related to using some studios/production facilities – Chalfont is not far from (say) Pinewood studios and not too far from a few others.

Coincidentally not far from the old USAAF HQ at  ‘Pinetree’/Daws Hill/Wycombe.

I wondered the same Bruce, odd to use locations that have no USAAF connections when there are so many that do.

This is all great – but why are they not just using Norfolk?! There are plenty of real old Airfields up here that could have been used!

This huge filming undertaking is filming all over the place,  Bledlow Ridge, near Princess Risborough (dressed up as Norfolk) and now a substantial airfield technical site has been built at Chalfont St Peter.
