Harker Hart K4769 of Nº 9 FTS, based at Hullavington, crashed on 14 November 1940, colliding with a tree whilst attempting a forced landing near Whitchurch. Its pilot, LAC Norman Dennis Steele, was killed in the crash. Does anyone have any more information about the crash (especially if they have access to the relevant ORB) and, in particular, does anyone know where LAC Steele is buried?

Whitchurch, Whitchurch everywhere! Thank you, Ant.H.

After a further bit of digging, there’s a thread over on RAF Commands that suggests that the Whitchurch in question was in Warwickshire.

Thank you, Ant.H.
It seems that, although he is commemorated on Panel 290 of the Runnymede Memorial, LAC Steele either has or had a grave, the location of which does not appear to be recorded. I do not say that it has been lost because it may exist and someone may be aware of it’s location. I am trying to help someone find it.
Furthermore, I’m unsure at which Whitchurch – there are places of this name in Bristol, Shropshire and Hampshire – the crash occurred. Does anyone know?

A quick search on CWGC shows an LAC Norman Denis Steele 923659 killed on this date, although unusually he is commemorated at Runnymede.
