I did mention that the Lamp looked more modern than ww2 in post number (**) – a well – real forums do have post count numbers LOL.
Any luck getting info on the markings ? military stuff is usually ‘marked’ even if just with inventory ID

I think Oracal is starting to nail this, now its a matter of age and who may of used it, with that bulb its obviously well post war

The lamp unit appears to be a sealed beam halogen one. Presumably that would make it post war.

I found a picture of the pattern used to check for the correct display of a modern day projector lens assembly. Some similarities?

‘aberration’
New one on me Oracal but thank you for the info, I am sure we are getting there

It looks like a device used to check a lens for aberration or correct focus.

I still think that the two angled rails at the top must be there for a purpose other than structural rigidity, but I don’t know what…….

Yes the Beams were angled to Starboard far enough out to enable the Navigator to be able to look out of the stbd perspex blister and report to the pilot the need to climb or descent to achieve/maintain 60 ft above water.

Cheers BAZV,
Does anyone know, the two amps on the dams raid Lancs, the lamps they used fore and aft to make sure they were at 60 feet above the water were they angled at all? This plate at the bottom is angled.
Trying to get some photos of the lamp markings

I did wonder if it might be some sort of Downward Ident Lamp/Landing Light, the orientation of the fasteners suggests that it is fitted from the top or back of a panel/mounting.The Lamp looks like it might be a little more modern than a WW2 Lamp, the pics of WW2 era Lamps that I have looked at all seemed to have a bigger/deeper backshell.
But I am most certainly not a Spotlamp Spotter – I was a Rigger and left most of the eleccy stuff to our Sparkys and Fairy’s .

I guess the inference re the Dams raid would have been that it was for checking the ‘Altimeter’ Spotlights, they would have needed a fairly narrow beam.
There do appear to be some markings on the spotlight.

BAZV, I think you are right, I thought the same, the angle set at the bottom as well.
I cannot think it had anything to do with the Dams raid, please feel free everyone to add anything you may think of.

Makes sense to me too……..
By: bazv - 15th January 2021 at 09:31
Also looks to me like a beam pattern/spread/focus checker.
By: Trolley Aux - 14th January 2021 at 20:54
I have asked for any markings on the lamp but no reply as I was thinking the same.
My thoughts are its to see what spread of light you get from a lamp or maybe changing bulbs or the reflectors.
Thank you

I do wonder if the angled rails at the top were for something to slide along. They could just be for stte gthening but, in my view, that seems unlikely. Are there any signs of wear on them? Just a thought….. Also, are there any markings on the lamp which might date it? Hope this helps.

Thank you for the input.
I had been told that is possibly something to do with the Dams raid
Here is the lamp

Something to do with bomb aiming, or gunner training, perhaps?
